engAGE is a research study conducted by the Park Aging Mind Lab at the UT Dallas Center for Vital Longevity. The study is designed to search for ways to maintain and promote brain health in older adults aged 60 and older.
If you choose to participate in the study, you may be assigned to one of three groups: two will learn skills in digital photography from a professional instructor, such as how to use a camera and Photoshop; and the third will participate in various fun activities in the convenience of their own home. Photography learning classes will take place at the engAGE site at 122 W John Carpenter Freeway, which doubles as a classroom space, as well as a social space for participants to work and socialize. The space will be open 9-5 Monday through Friday.

At the beginning and end of the 14 weeks you are involved in engAge, you will also complete a series of cognitive assessments and questionnaires. You may undergo a brain scan as well, so we can chart changes in your brain throughout the study.
The study will last 14 weeks, and will involve a time commitment of 15 hours per week. Depending on your group assignment you could be asked to complete your 15 hours at the site, between the hours of 9-5 Monday through Friday. In return for your time, you will be financially compensated. This time commitment includes 2 cognitive assessments, once at the beginning and once at the end of the study. These assessments are fun, brain games you will play under the direction of one of our trained research staff. You may also undergo a brain scan at the beginning and end of the study. Much of your time commitment depends on which group you are assigned to. Your time will largely be flexible.
You will have the opportunity to keep your mind healthy, active, and engage by participating in the study. From learning new skills to meeting new friends, you will be immersed in an environment that provides both mental and social benefits. You will also contribute to our understanding of the aging brain, allowing us to develop new ways of keeping the brain healthy across the entire lifespan.

Participants in the engAGE study will also be financially compensated for their completion of the assessments.
